Oman: the Friday market

Friday market - Souq Al Jumah StreetMuscat’s famous ‘Friday market’ is conveniently located in ‘Souq Al Jumah’ (Friday Market) street in Wadi Kabeer. In the early hours of the morning, I wandered along the street which was littered with cars containing scrappy ‘For Sale’ signs. I watched one group of smartly dressed guys in their weekend coloured dishdashas checking the movement of the doors on a scruffy Mercedes with some deliFriday market - Souq Al Jumah Streetght.

The market itself was em, ......interesting. The main covered area was full of people setting up stalls to peddle the usual cheap market tat. Behind this area, however, were nasty piles of second hand crap which looked like they had come off a scrap heap. There was even an impromptu auction taking place with one chap using a megaphone to flog battered washing machines and fridges to the highest bidder.

There was no need to hang around.
