Most of the waitresses at the Hakka restaurant in Jalan Raja Chulan wore smart red tunics. A few wore slinky, black, pencil-thin Tiger (beer) outfits.
I asked one waitress for her opinion of the shrimp with crispy onion rings, crispy anchovies and petai (smelly beans) in chili sauce. 'It's not for you.....it's for Chinese people,' she said. She was so wrong. I tried to engage another in conversation, 'duì bù qi......qing wèn.....' 'So sorry, don't speak Chinese,' came the reply. At least she recognised it was Chinese.
