Malaysia: Pulau Besar

Pulau Besar at dawnThe bats in the trees near our huts started to squeak before sunrise as I tip-toed out of the cabin to take more photos of bits of old wood. The sea was bathed in a grey light after dawn until the sun popped over the top of Berot Hill at the southern end of the island.

Pulau Besar at duskAfter breakfast there was more shadow bathing with occasional dips in the clear warm sea. Small groups of guests trudged reluctantly towards the jetty throughout the morning reducing occupancy to more normal levels. Several more hours were whiled away.

Before sunset, I lead everyone to the idyllic beach where few people venture except for a few locals who had decided to burn bits of coconut tree and armfuls of roofing material taken from a hut under restoration. The resulting thick black smoke thankfully blew in a north-westerly direction away from our resort.

It was time to eat for our country. We did well.
