We stopped for a coffee near the memorial of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman who is known as the ‘Father of Bangladesh’ after leading the country to independence from Pakistan in 1971. His house on the other side of the road, where Bangabandhu (‘Friend of Bengal’) and his family were murdered in 1975, has been turned into a museum. Apparently it was not appropriate to take a photo of the house. Noticing the guard sitting on a chair while reading a newspaper with a rifle between his legs, I didn’t argue.
