Singapore: Maritime Experiential Museum

Jewel of Muscat model, Marina Bay Sands ArtScience MuseumIn July we visited the Tang Treasures and Monsoon Winds exhibition at the Marina Bay Sands ArtScience Museum. The exhibition featured some of the 60,000 pieces of Chinese pottery, ceramics, jewellery and other treasures recovered from the wreck of a ninth-century Arabian ship that was discovered near Belitung Island off southest Sumatra in 1998.

In 2010, when we were living in Oman, a reconstruction of that ship, named the 'Jewel of Muscat', sailed unceremoniously from Muscat to Singapore. The dhow and treasure are now on display at the somewhat bizarrely named ‘Maritime Experiential Museum & Aquarium’ on Sentosa which opened this week.

This creates a bit of a dilemma as I said I would never return to Sentosa.
